Conference Focuses on Development in Latin America

On May 3 the Latin America Practice Group Conference brought together nearly 70 clients, Hogan Lovells lawyers, and lawyers from our Latin American relationship firms to discuss the challenges and opportunities that exist for companies operating in Latin America.

The Conference hosted two panels composed of lawyers and executives entrenched in the region’s corporate and financial development. Attendees also heard from keynote speaker Anthony Harrington, former U.S. Ambassador to Brazil, on the macro socio-economic outlook of the area.

The morning panel, moderated by José F. Valdivia III, a finance partner in Hogan Lovells’ Miami office, focused on how law firms can build better relationships with businesses and, more specifically, general counsel, based in Latin America. Panelists included:

• Oscar Arroyo, CABCORP, General Counsel;
• Valeria Chapa Garza, Honeywell International, Inc., General Counsel, Latin America;
• Rose Marie E. Glazer, Siemens AG, General Counsel, Americas;
• Dean M. Hasseman, CITGO, General Counsel; and
• Krista Sweigart, The AES Corporation, Senior Corporate Counsel.

Over luncheon, Anthony Harrington, President and CEO of Albright Stonebridge Group, revealed some of the key positive factors, such as the quality of newer political leadership, rising world demand for commodities, and a growing middle class, that have influenced the recent rise in economic performance in Latin America.

In the afternoon, Russell DaSilva, a Hogan Lovells finance partner based in New York, led a discussion on financial opportunities in the region. Themes that emerged throughout the session included the contribution of the consumer class; the role of sovereign, private, and multilateral investors in the region; and the development of good institutions to economic stability and growth in Latin America. Panelists included:

• Selma Mara Barroso, IFC, Principal Counsel;
• Andre Bhatia, ACON Investments, Partner;
• Don S. De Amicis, OPIC, Vice President and General Counsel;
• Gregory Makoff, Citigroup Global Markets, Managing Director, Head of International Liability Management; and
• Joaquín Quirante, Santander Investment Securities, Inc., Managing Director, Head of Santander Global Banking & Markets – NY.

Evening cocktails and dinner were provided at Plume, located in the District’s award-winning Jefferson Hotel.
